Castle Farm

Castle Farm on Tuffields Road is one of the oldest buildings in the village and lies close to our border with Babergh District Council. It is still a working farm and is Grade II listed.

The core of the building is C15th with additions in the early C17th and early C19th. The building is timber framed of one and a half storeys with attics.

The early core consists of a two cell open hall house with twin service rooms with a lodged upper floor structure at the left hand end. There are fragmentary

remains of the original close-coupled roof with smoke blackening above the open hall. The upper floor was inserted in the early C17th and a new parlour

block built at the right hand end. At the same time a chimney was built with open fireplaces to hall and parlour. A mullion window can be seen in the parlour.

There are interesting traces of C17th wall paintings.

A two storey rear wing was added in the early C19th.

With thanks to Historic England for the listing details.
